Has anyone used one of the AT&T-based wireless "home base" units on Cricket? These are boxes that take an AT&T sim and allow you to hook up a regular landline phone. Looking at something like this from the local AT&T store: https://www.zteusa.com/att-homebase

I've searched the forums and found a few old threads about weird activation issues, one person said it worked for 15 minutes then never worked again, another person said it the ZTE device sucked up her 5GB data allowance in 2 days.. Just looking to hear if anyone had a more recent experience.

Are you wanting both data and phone service. I've used att's fine phone unit on and off for years with no issue-but no data on that. Data would be hotspot which I image would me shut down.

I only "need" voice service, but having the data would be a nice bonus. For what it's worth, I've got a GoPhone branded hotspot with an unlimited SIM for a couple of months now

I called the local AT&T store to get pricing - $150 for the Phone only model, $200 for the ZTE WiFi model I linked above. I didn't tell them I'm on Cricket. It's tempting to just use the AT&T plan for $20/month, especially since they throw in the home base free with a 2 year contract.. BUT I don't want to lose my grandfathered group save discounts!

If you only need voice, buy the att home phone, or whatever it's called on ebay for $10-15, install your cricket sim , you're good to go. The zte unit will be quickly i'd by cricket as a data device and will shut down.whether they will cancel your account is down is another subject, which I wouldn't explore.

I would make sure you get the new version. There have been a lot of improvements vs the original one https://www.rvmobileinternet.com/att-evolves-the-home-base-new-wireless-internet-home-router-option-vastly-more-advanced/

For what it is worth someone tried the original version and reported there was a data leak but if this thing can get firmware updates maybe it was patched at a later time

unless you get cheaper service to use this type of device i think you would be better off with a smart phone with hotspot. the smartphone has the advantage of being portable.

this device lets you use a standard landline but that is not an important feature for most people.

only reason i could think of to get this is perhaps for someone older that wants it to behave like a landline.
