Not sure where to put this but since I am a Consumer Cellular customer, I'll start here. I will be traveling to Canada (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia) this summer. Would like to have a working cell phone. I have a spare 1st generation unlocked Moto X that I can take with me. I'll need a GSM carrier (I think Rogers is one) and not a whole lot of minutes since I'll only be in Canada about a week.

Should I buy a prepaid SIM ahead of time? Or is it better to buy one on my first day in Canada? Any recommendations are appreciated, even if only what forum I should ask this in.

Thanks.

Cricket has roaming to/from canada & mexico on their $50 plan. Might be something to consider.

I believe they roam on rogers.

If cricket price plans better meet your needs, might be worth while to move over entirely rather than just buying a sim an activating for a one time use. There's probably other options available too. Will let other chime in.

Thanks for the link. I am quite happy with CC (3 users on a plan for under $70/month total) so I wouldn't even consider another carrier at this time. I will explore the Rogers site. Looks like that's what I need.

I think Canadian prepaid is still pricey, and I believe there might be extra price/restrictions on things like long-distance and calls to/from USA. If you get a GoPhone $45 plan, you can have unlimited text/calls and 6 Gb data anywhere in USA/Canada, and it will roam on Rogers or Bell, whichever is available. A Canadian plan from either Rogers or Bell most likely would not allow use on the other.

I am also a CC customer. 2 years ago, I got a SIM for Bell on eBay and activated it the day before I drove to Nova Scotia. I did a Pay as you go prepaid plan, really only using it for data. I swapped SIMs after crossing the border and didn't miss a beat. I found Bell LTE coverage was excellent in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. I was primarily in Halifax for about 2 weeks. I believe I spent less than $35 US for a gig of data. Get a SIM and activate it on the Bell web site for free. When do you leave? What size SIM do you need? PM me; I may have an extra unused one somewhere.

Here are the plans - http://www.bell.ca/Mobility/Cell_phone_plans/Prepaid_plans . I did the pay per use with a data add on. For calls to home, I used Hangouts over WiFi and LTE for free calls. So, I did not use any Cellular minutes but could for emergencies if needed. I believe there was a minimum topup of $10 CDN. So, I eventually lost a few dollars in my account after it expired, but it was so little, I didn't really care.

Thanks for the info. Very helpful. We will drive to Saint John from New Hampshire about 8/2. Then to Halifax for a couple days and 1 day each in PEI and Cape Breton. Probably only be in Canada 8 days/7 nights. Don't really care about data as much as local calling. I can use WhatsApp over wifi for calls to the US if needed.
