Now I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop... i.e. Verizon *only* allowing whitelisted true Verizon-branded phones to be activated and/or active on their network. Hope I'm wrong.
It would be dumb for them to do that. People could easily jump ship to the other 3 which allow it.

Also that kind of 700C rule violation that could get them in hot water if it's enforced as it would be anti-competitive.

That would be too much of a stretch in my mind. Though I have frequently been proven wrong.

Within a couple years, if Verizon actually drops CDMA, then they open themselves to a wider variety of phones as long as the phones support their version of VoLTE.

Not gonna happen. You forgot who's in charge of enforcement.... a former Verizon employee/lobbyist(?) who is now the FCC chairman.

I guess we'll just have to wait to see if Verizon is that dumb. Or perhaps they figured that it wouldn't matter to "most" customers anyway.

I am as shocked as Captain Renault when learned about the illicit gambling in the back of Rick's Cafe Casablanca.

Captain Renault was more honest than many current FCC commissioners. (not naming names)

Isn't the government supposed to protect consumer? (instead of protecting big businesses like Verizon?)
