Yes, it will work. I flashed my Cricket branded Galaxy S4 to T-mobile firmware so that tethering would work.

In the grand scheme of tethering, is there a greater likely hood of an issue using either a handset or some type of dedicated device to do so? Also, should there be an issue with this would out effect the entire account, or just the one tethered line?

The only issue with using a dedicated hotspot device like an AT&T Unite is the IMEI lookup that Cricket can do and will give you a cease and desist on that device and give you a period of time before your account is cancelled. Using a phone to tether or hotspot, the only issues are wearing out the processor as phones aren't designed to run everything in your house or be solely used for wifi and battery life, other issues is if the phone checks authentication and whether or not it can be bypassed

I have a rooted, modified Sonim XP5700 that I tether with for hours on a daily basis. So far no issue, it can handle it. It has a huge nearly 4Ah battery that will hotspot for several hours before needing a charge. Cricket sees it as a phone, no nastygrams after over a year of doing this.
