There's a setting on an iPhone to send the message as sms if iMessage fails for some reason.

I saw that setting. The only issue I have is when my internet connection is sluggish, the iPhone will spend too much time trying to sync with Apple iMessage servers. It should try once for 30 seconds, then flip to SMS mode. It just lingers too long trying to get to the Apple servers.

iMessage is great! My younger son is using an iPhone SE with red pocket $5 per month plan 100 talk, 100 sms text and 500mb data. That 500mb data is like unlimited iMessage text for him. 90% of his friends uses iphones so it works out great!

What of iMessage not being able to get message traffic to MVNO and sprint or att users for hours?

The first thing I do when I format an iPhone is turn off iMessage. SMS compatibility with android phones is key. Plus texts are included in my att prepaid plan.
