My husband insists on keeping his flip TracFone and he gets service in nearly any place you can get it. Important because he travels in many rural places. I do not want to carry 2 phones but I can see the practicality of doing so.

Where on the Vzw coverage maps is "roaming" indicated?

And what exactly is being paid for on Vzw prepaid and PPC at $0.20/min and on Selectel at $0.25/min? "Vzw extended network" or "roaming"?

This is far too confusing.

It is very confusing,to say the least. For example, when I went to a Verizon extended area to test Boom to see if it worked,I had two phones, one with a Verizon prepaid sim(Droid turbo) and one with a Boom mobile sim(Nexus 6)..The Nexus 6 with Boom mobile showed "Extended Network" at the top but the Droid Turbo with Verizon prepaid showed "Roaming" at the top..That was really confusing to me..Both phones had all bars in the -70 to -73 or so db which is good reception but on the Nexus 6/Boom sim with that great reception I could do absolutely nothing..No calls or texting yet on the Droid turbo I could text and they were free and I made one call and was charged .20 a minute and had to double dial.

As far as roaming goes, you are roaming with Verizon prepaid when you are on there Extended network...You can't roam at all with Boom..You are roaming when on Selectel or Page Plus when you have to double dial to make a call.I guess each phone is different in what it shows at the top, whether Roaming or Extended network.

That's just my take on it,could be wrong.

Maybe this would be the best solution for Jaycocreek, too, since he just wants coverage for talk and text?Originally posted by Jaycocreek:
I just want coverage for talk and text, they can keep the rest as far as phones go..I have DSL for that.I do have to admit,it is nice to be able to google something when I am on a hand held though, away from the house..

Orohorse says he gets calls to go through @ 25 cents/min. with a flex card on Selectel in an extended area so that's the first report I've heard of it working at all. If I understand correctly, texts didn't work though.

I believe Verizon changed the offer to MVNOs so they could cash in on more of the market which left MVNOs not much bargaining power. I wish I had the great service Selectel gave me for over 2 years w/FREE roaming that "just worked" but those days are gone. Boom's prices are good and I get coverage MOST everywhere I did w/Selectel so this is where I'll stay for awhile.

Selectel had to refresh my account settings after adding the flex card and then the .25 roaming started working, the texting has always worked at no extra charge and was not affected by the "postpaid" to "prepaid" changeover.

I think you are probably correct on the theory about why all of this has happened, the Mvno's would not likely do all this just to piss everybody off.

On the official Verizon coverage maps: Clicking Prepaid = prepaid coverage is Red, Prepaid Roaming is maroon .

Clicking Data coverage = Verizon 3G & 1x , Extended 3G & 1x Clicking Voice & Messaging = Digital coverage & Extended digital coverage

All note voice service only in digital & analog coverage areas, Messaging in digital coverage areas.

So, I've used the terms Extended & roaming interchangeably, when in fact they probably are not the same thing. However the map

does not clarify it much. Someone said roaming is using another providers cell tower. Extended is then what? LTEiRA maybe - or

Something else ?

PagePlus plans for 3G or flip-phones should still work fine for text and extra-cost voice, when roaming. Two weeks ago, while on the per-minute Standard Plan with my 3G-only smartphone, I could double-dial on US Cellular for 29c/min. The $12 plan should still have the extra 20c for voice. As long as you keep some extra $$ in your account, the 20c voice roaming should work with the other monthly (LTE) plans, too.
